That's very strange since I've never received a vmail. You can also email them as noted in Cheap's link. I would definitely dispute it with AMEX as well; they should be able to assist. And email the hotel a letter with whom you have spoken with (they can be reached via the Contact Us link on the hotel's site).
I'm sure it will get sorted out as most complaints with Starwood do.
