What I would do right now is to make an international call China embassy or something like that IN CHINA (it's afternoon in there) to check if you really need visa to get in there even with the family loss. Many times, even without having passport, they do trip on such cases, although I've never heard of it about China's policy yet. Don't wait until tomorrow morning when the one in Houston opens, it will be too late.
I really hope that you can hear it's okay to go China without visas.
I guarantee it will not be OK to travel to China without visa unless you want to be put on the first flight back home. That is, if you are even allowed to board the plane in the US without a visa.
Fastest way at this point is using a visa agency.
