Another option you might not have considered. Your son and daughter could switch boarding passes and he could sit in the back. Give him the $150 you otherwise would have given CO and I bet he will be happy!
I don't think his 6'1" frame would enjoy the back, while the daughter is a lot easier able to fit in the back
