As gj83 indicates, airlines require you to fly regularly to attain elite status (amount varies by airline), and the mileage requirements reset every year. Most airlines permit these elite flyers to reserve exit row seats in advance. Others can typically get them closer to the flight only if the elite flyers haven't scooped them up.

Exit row seats don't do much for me, but for many, they're an important benefit of attaining elite status.
