As other's have said, the AMEX insurance is just regular insurance - they will cover you for what is lost (and repatriate you etc if necessary). My experience with them has been positive thus far.
That said, if you are concerned you need to speak to the insurance people themselves, they can give you chapter and verse - the Amex card people should be redirecting you as they are not supposed to give insurance advice.
You can get them (Amex insurance) on 01273 668300 but be aware they are only available during UK office hours (so call before you go!)
When I have called them before, the standard list of initial questions includes the class of travel I was in - I haven't had to use them to rebook travel yet but am intrigued as to why they ask the question and whether they would really fly you back in the class of travel you were originally booked in if necessary...
