I'd second that - York and Durham are both stunning, small cities (the latter being a lot hillier, though!) with a couple of the world's finest cathedrals. Well worth the trip, let alone a stopover. And both easily explored on foot.

If you'd prefer something more rural, then Alnmouth, and the surrounding coast, is rather lovely, although fewer trains do stop there.
