In terms of opup- I always checkin on line to get the seat I want- if they want to tell me to "get upstairs" afterwards that is their business!
Recently btw I have experienced:
OP UP on checkin
OP UP at gate (change boarding card)
OP UP at gate (machine spits out new little paper boarding card)
OP UP on board
Always from paid C to F.
In the last 3 months I had:
2x at checkin desk
1x at SSCI machine
1x gate

Always Z->F.
