Checked and though it was a reasonably close thing, (~AUD85 difference) Plan A was still cheaper. However Plan B would remove any worries re misconnects (though it's a ~5 hour connection window anyway)

What is NZ's attitude like if you misconnect from NZ to NZ on separate tickets (if airline's fault)?
