As was mentioned, it depends probably on whether you are talking domestic or international. But since there is no international first class, I assume you are referring to domestic.
I never get upgraded on my first segment if I fly from my home city (only prop planes). When I get upgraded on ANY segment of my itinerary for that day, I get the first class luggage allowance for the entire journey that day. This has been confirmed both by NW agents on the phone, by the kiosks when I check in, and by the ticketing agents.
