But that didn't do me much good when I flew them back in May and just adjusted my plans to not have to check a bag, which was just a minor inconvenience, but an inconvenience none-the-less.

Having to get a credit card to avoid the baggage fees on the rare occasions I need or want to check bags is relatively inconvenient. I'm going to guess you're one of those folks who doesn't consider Southwest a "major" carrier (even though they carry more passengers every year than CO or most of the other airlines you probably consider "major"), because the obvious response to that is you can check bags on Southwest without fees with any credit card, or no credit card at all!
