If you're on the upgrade list then the scanner at gate will just beep and print out a new seat assignment (or you'll be handed out one from the gate agent).
Sometimes (specially at LH operated lounges at foreign station I think) your name will be called in the lounge.
I've been handed op-up BP's at the gate both after calling and after bipping, don't think there's any difference.
I think that I had everything. From my new boarding pass waiting at the gate. Being called at the gate. The scanner beeping and printing my new seat. My name being called in the SEN lounge and got handed a new F boarding pass. Before check-in at my local airport about 4 hours before departure. Waiting in the lounge and just asking if boarding starts on time and then coming back with a new boarding pass.
A month ago, I checked the seat map before leaving the apartment and magically my reserved seat was empty again. Arriving at the airport they already gave me a F boarding pass before I could complain that they gave my seat away
