I'm actually pretty impressed w/ the functionality of the optimized mobile site. I use it all the time to get gates and times (and the site is usually more up-to-date than the screens in airports), as well as checking my AAdvantage account, changing seating assignments, etc. And that's on a non-3G BlackBerry. I would assume functionality is even better on smartphones that are more optimized and better equipped for web usage.
Actually, it's the same, and this is annoying. One of the good things about having an iPhone is that the web browser is fairly full-featured, and a nice thing about having 3G is that most sites can be downloaded in a reasonable amount of time. So loading up a somewhat crippled version of the site instead just leaves me with a few things that I'm not able to do, and some of them don't tell you that you can't do them until you're several steps into the process.
There would probably be some ways to get some value out of having an iPhone AA app--offline itineraries are a great idea, and an automatically-synchronized version of the timetable would probably be handy as well. I'll definitely agree that having a persistent login would be a real boon, and another advantage of apps is that they tend to be faster than web pages--the presentation layer is already on the application so you don't have to download superfluous HTML for formatting purposes.
