I assume from your original post, that your son is ticketed only BNA-DFW-BNA.
Forgot to add, the grandparents can get a gate pass and pick your son up from you at the gate, if you don't want the hassle of going through security and coming back again. Only you know what will work out best for him.

have them get a gate pass and pick them up..
on the return, the same is possible but I can see some sort of problem if you tell TSA and/or the airline that you are passing the kid on to the parents.. In theory it should be ok but I'm just sayin.. you might want to go out for that one (return)
