So why does the SSCI or desk ask for it? There have been posts on here where passengers have had to go to sales desks for their validity to travel to be verified, which indicates it may be required.
On corporate travel the EC card has always sufficed; on private travel more then 50% of the time I've been asked for the credit card - as I've never not had the card available I can't confirm or refute what you say, but I wouldn't chance it based on your statement.
