--I agree, and I hate that my tightening budget has forced me to book a flight domestically (although it was an open-jaw and not too bad at ~$0.04/mile redemption rate), as a couple of other posters have implied they had to do. Another problem I have had is that most of my miles are Aeroplan and they do not have upgrading with miles as an option.
