This is what actually happened on LH431 ORD-FRA yesterday. Even on the morning of the flight expertflyer was showing: F9 A9 C9 D9 Z9 Y9 B9 M9 H9 Q9 V9 W9 S9. About 3 days before departure it was down to W5 S3 but other fare classes were showing 9 for some time.

I checked in online 9.5 hr before departure, got to ORD to pick up BPs 1.5 hr before departure and the check-in agent casually gave me a BP saying that "the fight is sold out and you have a complimentary upgrade".

I don't know how long the flight had been sold out but the later ORD-FRA flight on the same day was showing fewer seats available in expertflyer. Perhaps the availability of the same flight (LH431) under the UA codeshare flight number (UA8837) on the morning of the flight may have been the more accurate representation of the actual situation: F2 C4 D4 Y0 B0 M0 H0 Q0 V0 W0 S0 T0 K0 L0 G0 P0 A2 Z4 E0 U0.
