The expiry date is clearly printed on the card, and for those trying to forge them then it's pretty clear they can't get around the magnetic strip on the card. To top all that, status and membership number is printed on the boarding pass and forging that will just create disparities between the paper and the computer which the computer will pick up on.
Not everyone is trying it on. Some of us travel a lot and have difficulty getting our renewed cards in the middle of a trip. Not surprisingly in that situation will only have expired card. If the card is not of the FFP of the airline operating the lounge it does sometimes cause issues (particularly with BA's penchant for insisting on card).

Certainly my experience, and even with BP+card half the time BA denies access to lounges to which I am entitled by my status
