A friend with status on AA (Plat) and UA (GS) says he never really needed his cards until he tried to use the BA lounge at T5 and was denied entry.
Sort of (and slightly off topic). When I used to fly ARN-ORD-CAE-ORD-ARN a lot with SAS (before OLCI existed), I found that presenting my *Gold card at the USAir CAE desk always gave me an upgrade for both parts of the return leg. This sometimes happened on the outward ARN-ORD leg, but always on both the return legs. I guess it was a misunderstanding of the rules at CAE, which I always forgot to bring to their attention...
