KLM didnt used to be able to spot this. 7 years ago I was curious to see what would happen on an economy trip to see my school friends and flew MAN-AMS-JFK, the system acknowledged I was platinum and I was given a lounge ticket, and the miles/sectors were added to the account.

On the other hand, I dropped my brother off at Gatwick last year and he was late for a BA flight, the Y checkin queues were huge so went with him to the Club desk and got a ticking off for it, although they did check him in.
