According to the chart that's a cool 72,000 QF-miles for the one-way upgrade? Is it even worth bothering?

After all, a one-way J award seat for this route is 96,000 QF-miles [or considerably fewer AAdvantage miles.]

Personally I'd be happier paying the 96,000 miles for a confirmed J seat rather than hang out for an upgrade - QF int'l upgrades are ALL standby. The value of those extra 24,000 miles would be the difference between the one-way J award taxes and the Y fare. Half the return Y fare of course, but if you do choose an upgradeable fare it will be in the thousands of dollars and the 24,000 miles saved will have cost 4 or 5c per mile. Even using the lowest Y fare, not normally upgradeable, the saved value will be 2-3c per mile.
