Unfortunately, Southwest doesn't serve any airport anywhere near close to VPS - MSY is 4h30 away, BHM and JAX are both 5 hours away. MCO is 6h30 away.
Basically, flying into that area, your options are VPS (right there), PFN/PNS (both an hour away), MOB/TLH (2h30 away) and GPT (3h away). Pensacola at least has AirTran service, but the rest of the cities, not so much.
Not sure if the OP paid $650 per flight, or $650 total (so $325/flight), but if it's $650/person, then DL can get you into VPS on the 24th and out of PNS for $439. If the Delta agent's willing to forego the change fee, then you're golden if the tickets were $650 each; if they were $650 for 2
and you can convince DL to waive the change fee again, it'd be an extra $210, which would be cheaper than pretty much any other option for getting from South Florida to Destin (driving, flying, etc.).
