I'm also a govt traveler... when I had to go SEA-DEN last year with a few weeks notice (for training), I watched for AS to beat UA (or was it F9's?) contract fare, then had my supervisor OK an out-of-policy non-contract ticket due to lower trip cost to the government.
Taxpayer wins, I win, AS wins.
And when you add the time it took you to find that, at your rate, loaded with benefits, plus the supervisor's time, also loaded with benefits, ...the cost savings are instantly eroded.
