I know you don't want a long trip, but Barbados is the most westerly of the Caribbean islands, and therefore, the trip should not be too long. As a Yank, I was amazed at the number of Brits there, so you might like it -- I did! I believe both BA and Virgin fly there, and probably charters, as well.

Might I suggest some of the hotels on Sicily? There are many Hiltons, now, and if you rent a car and visit the sights that may be doable, especially since the crowds and some of the heat would have dissipated since the summer.
