Arrow BNA-DFW-ONT-DFW-BNA for us, BNA-DFW-BNA for our 20 month old...

Lest you think we're abandoning our child at the airport... we're planning on leaving him with his grandparents in Dallas while we go to California for a couple of days! Our plan is to book a two hour layover so that we can take him outside of security, hand him off to the grandparents, come back through security and get on our plane. On the way back, reverse the process.

Obviously, there's no getting around a ticket for him, and we'd much rather have him in a seat than crawling all over us for the two hour flight back to Nashville. I know it'll have to be two separate PNRs.

So,. my questions are:
1. What's the best way to book these tickets? Does it matter?
2. Can I get an infant fare for his leg of the trip?
3. If we have to check a bag for him (almost certain,) will AA be weirded out that we're continuing passengers and we're only checking the bag for him?

Thanks in advance!
