That's a shame if true, but not surprising considering what happened to the brand. Diedrich started in Costa Mesa, CA as a small family operation that made fantastic coffee and had some great small coffee houses. It grew and eventually started buying up other smaller chains (Gloria Jean's, Coffee People). It got too big and failed - selling most of their retail outlets to Starbucks. They have continued to roast beans under the brand and do wholesale custom roasting. The owner, Martin Diedrich, left long ago to start his own smaller company, Kean coffee, now with two outlets. Back to doing what he was good at.
