I remember a story Joe Giacoponello the former CEO of LHW told he needed a jacket to sit in the lobby of a certain LHW hotel in the evening. The airline had lost his luggage, and his was of course provided a loaner.
One of my favorite restaurants in the Four Seasons in NYC, jacket required.
Dress codes are often more about providing an ambiance that help accentuates the experience rather than some form of perceived snobbery. There are a number of mid-market cruise lines that have black-tie/jacket requirements for formal night dinners.
I very much prefer hotels that have back/side passages guests can use when they go out running or to/from the gym. I really don't like having to personally walk through the main lobby when coming back from a run dripping with sweat.
