I haven't faced your exact example, but have had problems using the NW certs on a CO flight (booked through NW). This was like pulling teeth, but would always get done.

I think that the "no favors" policy has been implemented at NW now, and some of the people just won't go beyond what they think are the rules. Merging with DL has been a big mistake, in my opinion.
