The problem is that, unless you buy a YUP or BUP, you're flying the wrong airline. If you want upgrades on EWR/SFO, Continental is not the carrier for you! If either is convenient for you, I'd switch to either DL or AA. It will mean no more non-stop flights (unless you're willing to use JFK), but once you hit top tier on either of those carriers, your upgrade percentage will increase dramatically.
