I am also based out of SFO and travel to India several times yearly. I prefer to go via Asia. One SWU will take you all the way to BKK/SIN, leaving just a short hop to India on TG / SQ / 9W, which are all a pleasure to fly even in coach.
This was a very good post. I, too, prefer the experience flying via Asia than through Europe to get to India. You can get to SIN on UA and then take a short hop from there on SQ. On the way back, depending on the day of the week, the connection may be better through BKK instead.
