I fly the Dash-8's out of ROA all the time as well. I try to avoid them for longer flights like ROA-PHL and ROA-LGA (not that US gives me any other options on those routes), but they're just fine on the shorter ROA-CLT leg I usually end up taking.

Besides the noise, the ones that US Express is flying could use a bit of TLC inside as well. They're often looking a bit dirty and worn, and could use a session on Extreme Plane Makeover. But if you just need to get from point A to B, they'll do the job just fine.
