It is hit and miss depending on the airline, BD and some others don't have a problem with the card holder not travelling. Others like Iberia will not let you board unless you can show the card, even if the reservation is in your name. Once I had to buy a new ticket on IB because I did not have my own card with me, however they did refund the original fare.
