Everyone is "pre approved" for just about every card. That's why they send mail, email, and post advertisements. If you were guaranteed the highest card with an unlimited amount of credit, they wouldn't have you fill out an application.

I think the OP's complaint wasn't about applying for the credit card but rather for being shorted on the mileage offer. That is, the advertisement is that you'll get 20,000 miles, but after he puts the application in, he is told he will only get 5,000 miles.
The only thing that I can figure is that he was approved for a Platinum card, not a Signature card. Otherwise, I'd assume it was a system glitch and I'd definitely be trying to get ahold of someone at BofA or AS to rectify the situation.
