Because i just print out the ticket and i would be quite suprise if anyone has later stolen my seat when i arrive there just because a higher member qantas passanger stole my window seat.
Is there a reason why you want to face east or west? IME, the only reason you may wish to face either direction on BNE/MEL (which seems to usually take a more inland route than MEL/BNE) is if you want to see the Gold Coast (east) from 15,000ft. That apart, it's a pretty nondescript flight for the rest of the journey.
