You buy a one-way ticket from, say LGA to PIT for $30. The flight connects in MDW. You get off in MDW and don't board MDW-PIT. Don't check bags.
For your return, you buy a MDW-LGA ticket for $60, because if you buy PIT-MDW-LGA for $30, they won't let you on MDW-LGA if you don't fly PIT-MDW.
