At the risk of going a bit off-topic for this thread, the rules for writing country names in English evolved over centuries. Airport codes are an invention of the early computer age, when upper-case-only text was standard. In addition, writing them in upper-case helps distinguish them from three-letter words that happen to be spelled the same way: a
FAT passenger is not (necessarily) also a
fat passenger!
