Honestly I get to rest, read, and work with minimal burden when I fly with them. In fact, they like to sit together, so often my wife and I will fly in front of or behind them, even in narrow-body Y. The person sitting next to them looks terrified at the start of the flight, but is always happy with the experience in the end. My kids don't overflow their seat, smell bad, yap at their neighbors about their status or otherwise start up annoying conversations, yak loudly on their cellphone the whole time they're on the ground, or spill red wine on their neighbors.
Compared to what I've seen on planes, you sound like a strict disciplinarian more than a free spirited hippie!
