Since I am not a big fan of online checkin in general, I am even less of a fan of it being done for me automatically by Big Brother Continental. I find this very heavy handed on their part.
But the consequences are the same whether you are checked-in or not and miss a flight.

I can understand the desire to turn off auto check-in and I bet CO could offer something when viewing the PNR online to let you opt-out (or make a permanent setting that always has auto check-in off), but they probably do not want to confuse novice users.

I am not sure how auto check-in qualifies CO as "Big Brother"...
