Qs. about clearing customs and connecting airlines at JFK

Hello all! I hope this is the correct area to post my question (I couldn't find a section on airports).

I am going to be dealing with JFK in a couple of weeks on a trip to Thailand. Hence, I will need to go through terminal 7. I have 2.5 hours to get there from Terminal 3 (connecting flight), really just 2 hours if you consider the half hour boarding time.

Is this enough time? Will I be rechecking my baggage? Will I need to go through customs (this is my very first international flight)? Or is customs just for returning INTO the US? If so, where is customs in relation to Terminal 3 and Terminal 7? If not, I probably still need to know on my return flight.

On my return flight, where is customs in relation to Terminal 7? I read that Terminal 8 has a customs checkpoint. Is this the checkpoint I need to go through?

I am a US citizen.

Thanks,
