What states have cheap wine? (and do you tote them home?)
This might not seem related to flying, but my wife just had to travel to Indiana to catch a flight and stopped at a Costco to shop. The wine was WAY cheaper than at discount retailers in Kentucky. (Kentucky alcohol, in turn, is WAY cheaper than Ohio, Tennesse, Mississippi, or most other states I am familiar with. I thought Kentucky was cheap until my wife brought home some wine from Indiana).
At an Indiana Costco, my wife was able to buy Kendall Jackson Grand Reserve Chardonnay (not Vintner's Reserve) for $14.99. At a Kentucky Sam's Club that would cost $19.99, although I think the price just went up to $21.99. In an Ohio Sam's Club I think it would cost $24.99. Needless to say, this is a big difference.
A couple of other wines she bought were:
Conundrum: $19.99
Santa Margherita Pinot Grigio $16.99
The reason I mention these is that all three of these are upscale, mass-market wines. Chances are many are you are familiar with them, and if so, recognize these as good prices.
Now for my questions.
1. Do these prices reflect prices available throughout Indiana at places like Costco or Sam's Club (if you know)?
2. What other states have really cheap wine prices? I used to think Kentucky was cheap, but obviously I don't any more.
3. Do any of you have places (in the U.S., not duty free) where you regularly buy a nice or semi-nice bottle of wine or two and stick it in your suitcase (or car) to bring home because of the low price? If so, where?
Thanks!
