Just a few minutes of delay going around summer pop-up thunderstorms on approach to ATL and you will miss your connection, and possibly end up standing by for a middle seat at the back of the bus all the way to SAN. Take the later flight, secure a good seat, and have another xxx on the rocks at the CRC while you're waiting.
Funny, you were posting while I was editing my first post to add the outcome. You are absolutely right and I will toast to you while in the CRC.

OUTCOME:
50 min connection in ATL due to schedule change. Flying from Rome then connect to San Diego. IMO, not enough time to deplane, clear imm/cust, recheck bag and then dash to another terminal.
I called DL and asked to be rerouted via JFK with 2hr layover. I'm on ff award tickets and due to DL schedule change, it was no problem. It's the flight I wanted in the first place. Nice how it all works out sometimes.
