If you dig a little deeper, to the numerical ratings, every low cost carrier scored higher than the highest scoring network carrier. The lcc's scored between 687 and 750 points while the highest rated network carrier scored 671 points. WN scored 736 points with neither IFE or meals.
Whether it was lower expectations, better execution of the services they did offer, or a combination of the two, the lcc's outranked the network carriers.

In most cases one also had to remember that the LCCs do provide many of the little extras that the big boys do not provide in some cases. Such as inflight snacks (its not food service but its still something) which WN and AirTran provide. Or other things like satellite TV (jet blue), satellite radio (air tran), internet service on all planes, etc. And just to note, I do realize that some of the big boys offer some of those items but not in every situation.
