This works like this all over Schengen area (some variations apply: in ZRH for all passengers and in Germany for flights to the USA).
Just flew through MAD last week. Granted, I was connecting to a intra-Spain flight but I didn't see an option to NOT go through passport control. Of course, I certainly could have missed something along the way.
