JAL website shows availability but AA cannot see it. It is operated by JALways. I was able to secure a seat on the flight a week before, but it's not the date I want (so I proved to myself that I can buy a JALways operated flight with miles).

The quick answer is that almost every airline retains more availability for its own members than for partners or alliance members.
There are some great threads on how to find for partner availability but unfortunately search has taken a vacation so I am unable to pull them up for you.
What you need to do is find a 3rd partner for both that shows online partner availability for their members. I use either BA or QF. If they show availability for JL than availability will be happening for aadvantage also.
