Unless the others are expecting to do a bit of traveling besides getting to/from Alaska, it doesn't seem like it's worth the hassle. Just try to pack closer to the weight limits per checked bag, take the maximum carry-on, carry coats (if needed), and minimize the fees that way. Baggage fees compared to what you're paying for cruise are minimal and the cost and value of time trying to avoid the fees might cost more than the fees themselves.....
