Is BKK-SIN-CHC-WLG really backtracking?

Hi all,

in planning a trip home for Mrs TK WLG-BKK using a Star Alliance Biz award with my THAI miles, I constructed the following routing:

WLG-AKL(NZ)-BKK(TG) // BKK-SIN(SQ)-CHC(SQ)-WLG(NZ)

Looked very straightforward to me! But THAI in AKL are telling me that CHC-WLG is 'backtracking' and so cannot be ticketed. I have searched, but most reference to backtracking relate to RTW ticketing, and not the more humble return.

Thoughts?

I'm tempted to reroute the whole thing on SQ now to poke TG in the eye!!

Cheers, TK
