In fact, it was flying AC as a United 1K that I came to think this way. I couldn't get upgrades, or even premium economy seats until I was Elite. Having AC status and flying AC was much better. The same could be said for UA, TG, etc.

I agree.
I just made Elite for 2010 and every year only fly 75,000 stat miles on AC.
Since AP took away 2x SSWU UG at 40,000 thresh, I don't think the rest of my flying for miles this year will be on AC as there is no incentive.
Better to put the miles in another program once you make Elite and have no chance for SE.
BTW, love Phuket and have been there 2x a year for the past 8 years!
