IF you have an HHonors Mutual Fund, you SHOULD be able to post to an FF account in either name. And even if you have a problem, you can get it resolved, and get a few thousand courtesy points for your trouble, with a phone call.
I think it works differently depending on the airline you're posting to. AA has been problematic with me on my wife's AA account. Currently trying my wife's UA account, waiting for it to post. Compounding complication: we have different last names.
