AA used to, maybe still does, run a scheme where you get OW Emerald status immediately if you put up a lump of money that you can use for travel over the next year. I think that was about $25k. You lose any money you spend if you don't use it by the end of the year. If you have the time to waste, it's fairly easy to get OW Emerald on AA for under $10k so that kind of deal seems reasonable to me, and must help AA's cash flow, though I've no idea how many takers there are / were.
