Not sure which "red eye" you're talking about. The PDX-SJC flight is a morning flight and the return is a late afternoon flight.

I doubt you'll see an increase in frequency on PDX-SJC-AUS. The whole point of this is to revive the "nerd bird" from SJC-AUS, a route that AS thinks they can run profitably. The PDX-SJC segment seems to be tagged on to carry some through traffic from PDX. PDX-SEA-AUS makes very little sense actually.
