There are many, many different opinions on this. There are basically three options:
1) Side by side - advantage is that you can talk to the person next to you, and there is a divider that lowers part way. Downside is that you have to twist your neck to talk to them.
2) Across the aisle - advantage is that you can easily see the person you're travelling with, disadvantage is that you have to yell across the aisle to talk to them.
3) One in front of the other - not a bad option, but again there is the neck twisting issue and odds are the person at the back will have to lean forward.
I personally like option 1 - at least you can talk to each other, pass things across and chat.
But going to London, hopefully you'll be sleeping and it won't matter who you're next to...
